161™ speaker system

Performance and versatility

Streamlined design. Startling performance. Bose® 161™ speakers are a versatile option for both music and film listening. They work with your stereo receiver, but can also serve as front or surround speakers in a component home cinema setup.

  • Component speakers that connect to a stereo or home cinema receiver
  • Twiddler® drivers use proprietary technology to generate more air movement from a small enclosure for rich low-frequency sound
  • Custom mounting brackets included for additional placement options

These small bookshelf stereo speakers provide balanced stereo sound that rivals much larger stereo speakers. An Articulated Array® speaker design uses precisely positioned drivers inside the speaker cabinet to provide a large, consistent sound field. This means you get broader, more even sound throughout the listening area.

If you’re a component-minded home cinema enthusiast, these sleek speakers are also ideal for front or rear speakers. Custom mounting brackets are included to increase placement options throughout your home.

  • Articulated Array® speaker design with precisely positioned drivers provides a large, consistent sound field.
  • Stereo Everywhere® speaker performance produces balanced stereo sound over a wide area. The result of proprietary Bose™ technologies, these stereo speakers let you enjoy balanced sound throughout the listening area, unlike conventional home audio speakers that radiate sound mostly in a single direction.
  • Twiddler® drivers use proprietary technology to generate more air movement from a small enclosure. They deliver the kind of performance you'd expect from much larger speakers, making it possible to enjoy rich, low-frequency sound from smaller speakers.
  • Home cinema expansion capable for cinema-like sound—and a seamless home cinema design—when you combine this product with a centre channel speaker and any Direct/Reflecting® speaker system.
  • Magnetically shielded speakers allow for speaker placement in close proximity to your TV without interfering with the picture quality.
  • Syncom® computer tested to ensure one of the highest levels of quality and reliability in the audio industry.
  • Custom brackets included for easy installation and flexible placement possibilities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Balanced mids and highs I've used these pair of speakers for some time now, and I have used them as stereo as well as surrounds. Currently it is stand mount and meets my surround requirement. The set up that I currently have is a Yamaha RX -V673 receiver with a Yamaha bluray player. Speakers are Front Right, Left : B&W DM 603S3 Centre B&W LCR 40, surrounds are 161(why ? because i needed them compact as there was no room to accommodate larger speakers), and front presence speakers (which are a feature of the Yamaha receivers) are Bose 201, Sub is Velodyne CHT 10. I have to say these 161 make an impression of their own, they stand out. The 7 channel stereo option of the Yamaha when listening to music brings the best out of these 161's. As I mentioned Ive also used these speakers as front stereo coupled with my Velodyne sub, as the bass is lacking (understandable), but you need to set the crossover right or else the bass of your sub will overwhelm the highs and mids. For that you would have to place your sub and speakers properly(lots of trial and error) till you get what you want. Once the system is set you will not be disappointed, these little beauties sound very balanced and the soundstage is also great, your sub will provide for the bass and you will enjoy the experience. BTW I was using a YAMAHA AS 500 stereo amp to power them. I was really enjoying my experience, then I upgraded my stereo speakers to Bose 301's and moved the sub and 161's to my home theatre setup. In conclusion Pros :1) Compact and easy to handle. 2) Durable. 3) Easy set up 4) Balanced sound, very good mids and highs. 5) Value for money. Cons: 1) Wire connection is the spring loaded type instead of banana clips. 2) Lacking in bass 3) Cannot be placed on a flat surface, designed to be wall mounted or stand mounted.
